About Us

Nairobi Centre of Sri Aurobindo Society is located in the capital city of Kenya. Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa that lies on the equator with the Indian Ocean to its south-east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east.

The country is named after Mount Kenya, second highest mountain in Africa, and has seen human habitation since the Lower Paleolithic period (some 2.5 million years ago, earliest subdivision of Old Stone Age). Famous for its natural beauty, stunning scenerary and abundance of rare and amazing wildlife such as the Maasai Mara, Tsavo National Park and Amboseli National Park, Kenya attracts tourists from world over.

Kenya's captial city Nairobi is situated next to a national park and is one of the most populous cities in East Africa and most prominent in Africa politically and financially. Home to thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 100 major international companies and organisations, including UNEP, headquarters for the UN in Africa and Middle East, World Bank, Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture. At 5889 feet above sea-level, Nairobi experiences a moderate climate.


The city is adjacent to the eastern edge of the Rift Valley (known as the 'cradle of mankind'), the Ngong Hills are located to the west, Mount Kenya looks over the north and Mt Kilimanjaro the south-east of the city. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh water lake and the largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania.

Under the guidance and inspiration of The Mother a beautiful building named Sri Aurobindo Bhavan has been constructed where activities of the Society take place since the inauguration of the Bhavan and Enshrinement of Sri Aurobindo's Relics on 13th July 2003.

The Bhavan is the first of its kind on the African continent and aspires to be the resource centre for Africa. Presence of Sri Aurobindo's relics is a blessing to the African continent preparing it for a transformation, which will help humanity bring a radical change in their consciousness.

The activities of the SAS Nairobi centre take place at the Bhavan, which is situated on Riverside Drive, Lavington, Nairobi. Study classes, collective meditations, seminars and cultural programs are held at the Bhavan regularly. Speakers are invited to give talks on various topics in the lighty and vision of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo.

The Centre houses a library from where all can borrow books and CDs. Educational and cultural books are distributed to school, libraries, hospitals and various other institutions. Various publications and audio visuals on health, medicine, evolution, culture, new concepts of education, etc. are distributed amongst members, friends and well wishers.

The Centre offers membership to aspirants and institutions and at present it has more than 100 members.

The Annual Membership fee is Ksh 2,400. Members receive a monthly AIM magazine from SAS, Puducherry by air mail in the words of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo on various aspects of life and a monthly newsletter published by the Nairobi Centre, which can be viewed here.

Sri Aurobindo's shrine at Sri Aurobindo Bhavan is open from 8 am to 7pm. All are welcome. It is a place for silent meditation.
